THE POTTERY

Repairing old broken pottery with gold plated Arabic calligraphy pieces is a modern twist on the traditional art form of kintsugi*. This method involves taking broken pottery pieces and attaching gold-plated Arabic calligraphy pieces to them. The use of Arabic calligraphy adds a unique cultural element to the repair process and gives the pottery a new and meaningful purpose. The gold-plating not only adds a sense of luxury to the pottery but also symbolises the idea of valuing brokenness. This art form not only preserves the history and cultural significance of the pottery but also brings new life and beauty to it. This approach is inspired by the traditional art of Kintsugi, which emphasises on embracing imperfection and valuing the history of the object.

Kintsugi is a Japanese art form that involves repairing broken pottery using a mixture of lacquer and gold powder. The word «kintsugi» literally means «golden joinery» in Japanese, referring to the use of gold in the repair process. The idea behind kintsugi is that the broken pieces of pottery are not seen as flawed or damaged, but rather as something that has been transformed and given a new life.

Pottery has played a significant role throughout history in many cultures, including the Arab culture. In the Arab culture, traditional pottery making techniques are passed down from generation to generation and are deeply ingrained in the culture. Pottery is often considered a form of art and is used for a variety of purposes such as cooking, storage, and decoration. The economic and social development of the Arab world has been affected by pottery as it was used for trade and commerce and an important source of income for many families. Pottery also holds cultural and historical significance, as many pieces have been found in archaeological sites providing valuable insights into the history and culture of the region, and it was also used in religious practices such as creating ritual objects and ceremonial vessels.

*The practice of kintsugi is said to have originated in the 15th century, when a shogun›s favourite tea bowl was accidentally broken. Rather than discarding the bowl, a craftsman was asked to repair it using gold, making the bowl even more valuable and beautiful than it was before. This concept of valuing the brokenness and seeing it as part of the object’s history, rather than as a flaw, is at the core of kintsugi. kintsugi has become an important part of Japanese culture and is often seen as a metaphor for life. It reminds people to embrace their imperfections and to see beauty in the things that have been broken. It also encourages people to take care of the things they have, rather than just throwing them away and getting new ones.
